MELBOURNE CAT VIRUS OUTBREAK

In recent weeks we have received reports from the Australian Veterinary Association  that since 1st January of this year, there have been multiple outbreaks of Panleukopenia Virus in kittens brought in to the RSPCA from the greater metropolitan area of Melbourne. All cases to-date have been less than 4 months of age, with  most of the cases being from the northern suburbs of Melbourne. These were admitted as strays into the RSPCA’s Epping Animal Welfare Facility. There has also been one confirmed case from the eastern suburbs of Melbourne which was admitted as a stray into the Burwood Animal Care Centre. As of the time of printing, we have not had any cases in Maryborough, but will remain vigilant for   any    signs    of     confirmed   cases in Central Victoria. The standard “core” vaccine  “F3” protects cats and kittens from this virus. Symptons may include:

  • Vomiting and diarrhoea
  • Tremors in kittens
  • Miscarriage of litters in pregnant cats
  • Lethargy
  • Abdominal pain / discomfort
